Why Wear a Short Wedding Dress?

Short Bridal Gowns are in Fashion but Why Choose One?

Sep 1, 2009 Helen Smeaton

A short wedding dress is practical, stylish and above all fashionable and can double as a dress for both the wedding ceremony and the evening party to save money.

Tea length wedding dresses are being shown by all the major designers right now from Vera Wang to Oscar de la Renta and Priscilla of Boston. They may make up only a small part of their bridal collections but these dresses stand out as they are fun to wear and are highly practical.

Reasons to Wear Short Wedding Dresses

One of the biggest reasons for choosing a short length bridal gown is that it can be worn both during and after the wedding ceremony. So many brides spend a fortune on an elaborate long gown with an equally long train for the church ceremony then realize it will be almost impossible to dance the night away in it at the post-wedding party. With a short wedding dress, it’s easy!

And there are other practical reasons too:

  • There is no need to worry about tripping down the aisle in a short frock.
  • Short gowns are perfect for weddings abroad or in hot climates and won’t get covered in sand if saying “I do” on the beach.
  • Save money by choosing a short colored wedding dress which can be worn again and again after the big day.
  • And colored dresses are easy to buy straight off the peg from prom dress stores or your local department store so are an ideal choice if getting married in a hurry.

Tea Length Wedding Dresses

A shorter style suits the petite bride who may feel overwhelmed by layers of fabric in a long gown. Current short length styling favors 50’s-style dresses with delicate layers of tulle and lace. Brides can accessorize their dresses with pretty sashes, adding color if desired and add a short jacket or shrug to give a different look for the evening.

Short wedding dresses are not just for summer weddings either, as they can be teamed with a calf-length coat jacket, fur hat and mitts for an ultra cool winter wedding look. It’s also far more practical than trying to put a long winter coat over a multi-layered long bridal gown when the temperature drops.

Finding Short Length Wedding Dresses

Whilst there are some fabulous affordable short dresses available in a range of fashion stores and prom dress shops, some brides may find their ideal frock by checking what’s available closer to home. Short dresses were the height of fashion in the 50’s and current short bridal styles look very similar so ma’s or grandma’s wardrobe may well be hiding the perfect item. What better way to wear something borrowed and save a fortune at the same time!

Short Wedding Gowns

Be fashionable and daring by wearing a short wedding dress which not only looks pretty and feminine but saves money. Wear it during the ceremony, for the wedding party and, if choosing a colored short wedding dress, get extra use out of it for special events afterwards.
