Add Unique Retro Touches to Your Wedding Attire

With a little bit of imagination, everyone can be creative on their wedding day!

Here are a few ways to add vintage touches to your modern-day celebrations.

Wedding Attire

  • Wear a strapless gown or a tea-length, A-line dress. A white bridesmaid dress can even double as a wedding dress – be sure to get it custom-fitted.
  • Pair it with an old-fashioned elbow-length or shoulder-length veil – or try the 1940s style birdcage veils that are so hot right now!
  • Add glitz with a classic rhinestone or crystal tiara, or adorn your hair with tiny flowers and gems.

Necklaces and Earrings

  • Cameos, elegant rhinestone chokers, and classic pearl necklaces add a retro touch to any outfit.
  • Pearl earrings and diamond studs are always chic. For added drama, wear large chandelier earrings. Be sure to keep the rest of your accessories modest to avoid the Vegas showgirl look – unless, of course, that's the look you have in mind!

Shoes, Gloves and Handbags

  • Try a frilly or beaded clutch.
  • Wear classic, silk-satin bridal pumps.
  • Choose shoes and bags in a shade of white that matches your dress – or opt for a vibrant, contrasting colour to add a funky "pin-up" touch to your retro attire.
  • Gloves – short, two-tier, or opera-length – can be an elegant or tongue-in-cheek homage to the past.
  • French manicures or pastel nails appear clean, and classy.

Undergarments

  • An old-fashioned garter is a must.
  • Try bare legs, or nude thigh-high stockings adorned with a wide lace band.
  • Choose underwear that will not show through your dress. Opt for a seamless bra and panty set, a bustier or a corset in a neutral shade.
  • Save the vintage touch for your wedding night lingerie and your honeymoon, when you can have fun with retro pastel baby-dolls and chiffon negligés.

Something Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue

  • Borrow pretty hair clips and crystal bobby pins from your best girlfriend.
  • Necklaces and earrings (bonus points for blue gems!) can be borrowed from mom, or grandma.
  • Sew a tiny blue ribbon bow to your bra.
  • Opt for a blue satin garter set – one garter to keep, one to toss.
  • A personalized wedding gown label sewn to the inside of your dress is a unique touch of "new."

Flowers

  • Choose hand-tied roses in white, or a mix of cream and pastel flowers.
  • Get ready to toss the bouquet to your best friend, and have a fabulous retro wedding day!
