Distinctive accents of gold, silver, flowers, gems, crystals and pearls are the most exquisite additions to wedding hair styles for 2008.

Modern brides desire something stylish but uncommon to add flair to their bridal hair style. While hair accessories are not new, the styles and themes have broadened considerably in the last few years. Hair Comes the Bride is a web-based bridal boutique specializing in the latest, most stunning pieces.

Hair Pins

There was a day when hair pins were purely functional. They were unadorned, and used to discreetly hold hair in place. Today’s decorated hair pins for brides are less functional and more fashionable.

There is an endless array of hair pins decorated with almost anything the imagination can conceive: crystal flowers, silk rosebuds, enamel ladybugs, mesh dragonflies, or pearl starfish, just to name a few.

Hair pin adornments are noticeably small. When strategically placed in the bridal hairstyle they create drama or whimsy depending on the bride’s intentions and how many are used.

Combs and Barrettes

While combs and barrettes have been popular for many years, they too have evolved in variety and diversity. Like hair pins, combs and barrettes have been mostly functional. Their purpose was to secure specific pieces of hair. Some were undoubtedly decorative, but today’s versions are much more elaborate and ornate.

Some can easily be mistaken for authentic brooches with their 1920s and 1940s designs. Coupled with a period dress they make a stunning statement with or without a veil. They lend to the old-Hollywood glamour brides are opting for in 2008.

The width of a comb or barrette allows for a larger collection of adornments than a hair pin, thus only requiring one or two to complete the bridal look.

Crystals, pearls, rhinestones and silk are very popular. Designs range from large square-cut rhinestones and delicate pearl clusters, to constellations of glittering crystals and coloured silk floral bouquets.

The trendiest look for hair combs right now is theatrical, and not easy for everyone to wear. Combs affixed to feathery plumes, oversized silk roses or orchids, organza ruffles or bunches of tulle are dramatic. Often it is a combination of two or more of these embellishments that make the comb so striking. This is for a non-traditional bride and is more reminiscent of a costume than a bridal head piece.

Tiaras

Once reserved for royalty only, tiaras are now hugely popular for brides wishing to be a princess for a day.

Crown-like tiaras are less common due to the difficulty of keeping them secured to the bride’s head. Most often bridal tiaras are demi-lunes—similar to hair bands—that are circular but not closed.

Traditional brides like a tiara that has a featured design in the centre, with tapered sides. This is more like the diadem style epitomized by Princess Diana’s or Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York’s weddings.

The contemporary tiara is simpler in design and usually smaller in scale. In addition to traditional gems or crystals, tiaras now incorporate flowers, pearls, ribbons and themed embellishments like stars, starfish or shells. Bands can be thin or thick, twinned, twisted or rolled.

Caring for Hair Accessories

Treat these pieces like heirloom jewelry and keep them in boxes to avoid dust and sunight that may damage delicate fabrics or feathers. Also be sure to avoid spraying hairspray or getting hair product on the pieces. Product can dull the brilliance of gems, crystals and pearls, can clog settings, or can discolour any of the materials the adornment is made from.

A crafty and imaginative bride who can make her own hair accessory has limitless possibilities, and can keep the cost of down. For everyone else, bridal boutiques stock extensive varieties, or can be purchased online. Make sure any adornment is taken to the trial-run appointment for wedding hair to ensure it is placed and secured perfectly for the big day.
