Types of dresses, colors and fabrics to look for when selecting a bridal gown for a beach wedding.

A long heavy traditional wedding gown is not an easy thing to wear on a hot sandy beach. Therefore, for a beach wedding gown, there are certain styles, fabrics and colors that are more suitable.

White Beach Wedding Dress

A white dress is fine for a beach wedding because it looks great against the sand and sea. It may not stay as clean, however, due to the elements. Try a white dress in a matte jersey because it is lightweight and will move fluidly. The Mary L Couture Matte Jersey Halter Gown in a light ivory is a great choice. The circular rhinestone brooch at the V-neck adds some elegance. Plus it is fully lined and has padded cups, which is important when sunlight hits the dress.

Color Wedding Dresses

If having a white dress is not important, multicolored dresses will look beautiful at the beach, especially in a simple floral or paisley pattern for a tropical wedding dress. The Sue Wong Beaded Flyaway Halter Gown is a perfect example because its colors of pink, fushia and gold will look beautiful against the sand. The dress is flowing and elegant in a chiffon material, perfect for a dusk beach wedding. The crystals and beads around the empire waist line add some formality so it doesn’t seem like just another dress.

Beach Wedding Gown Styles

A beach wedding obviously requires a dress that can be worn in hot weather. Look for gown styles such as strapless, spaghetti strap, halter, keyhole, one shoulder, or off the shoulder.

For an older or second time bride, a caftan is an interesting style choice for a beach wedding dress. A caftan is a loose fitting dress with flowing sleeves, almost like a cover-up. The Jeweled Caftan from Badgley Mischka is perfect. It is very colorful, made from silk so it is very flowing, and has a jeweled waistband. Great for an evening beach wedding.

A mermaid wedding dress also makes sense for a beach wedding. This is a dress that is snug to the hips and legs and then flares out at the knees. The Mermaid Scoop Floor-length Satin Wedding Gown from Florasbridal.com is a good choice because it has a sleeveless, scoop neck design and is made of a light satin so, even though it is fitting, it is still easy to walk in across the sand.

Ideal Fabric for a Beach Wedding Dress

Great fabrics for beach wedding attire are chiffon, silk, mesh, cotton or even crochet for casual beach wedding dresses. The white Strapless Crochet Maxi Dress by Melissa Odabash at net-a-porter.com has a crocheted bodice, but placed over cotton so it is not see through. The skirt also has tiers of crochet trim, so it llooks very summery and innocent.

Finding the perfect beach wedding dress is not that difficult since you can go beyond traditional bridal retailers and get a suitable dress off the rack.
